1. How long is the IELTS reading test?
The IELTS (both academic and general training paper) reading test lasts for 60 minutes.

 

2. Does everyone take the same reading test?
No, there are two different tests for IELTS reading, the academic paper and the general training paper.

 

3. How many reading passages are there?
Three reading passages for the academic paper and three sections (five passages) for the general training paper.

 

4. How many questions are there?
No matter it is academic or general training paper, you must answer 40 questions.

6. How to score my reading test?

7. Do I lose a point if my answer is wrong?
No, you don’t lose a point for a wrong answer. It is better for you to have a guess. Never leave a space on your answer sheet.

 

8. Do I have time to transfer my answers at the end of the reading test?
No, there is no extra time. So you must write your answers directly on the answer sheet.

 

9. How long should I spend on each passage?
You are advised to spend 20 minutes on each passage in an academic paper and 20 minutes on each section in a general training paper.

 

10. What types of questions will I get in IELTS reading?

11. Can I write on the reading question paper?
Yes, you can. You can circle out the keywords and make notes as you need.

 

12. Can I write all my answers in capital letters on my reading answer sheet?
Yes, you can.

 

13. Is spelling important?
Yes, it is. You won’t get a score from a wrongly-spelling answer.

 

14. How can I improve my reading skills?
     1) Be familiar with all types of questions and related techniques. Click here to learn more about this!
     2) Develop your ability to scan. Instead of understanding everything in the reading passages, you need to learn how to locate the answer in the passages. Click here to learn more about this!
     3) You must know how to sort out key words to locate your answer in the passages.
     4) Do not only look at one question at once. It is better to keep an eye on two questions, so you can avoid missing answers. This is also applied to the listening test. Click here to learn more about this!
     5) It is important that you go through Cambridge IELTS Reading to get used to a range of topics. You can also refer to my Learning material page to enhance your reading ability. However, you should also know that these materials do not necessarily improve your reading score band.
